I have always believed that Mary should have been shown as a very young, dark skinned girl who took on the weight of the world when the angel announced to her that she would bear the only child of God. What would that do to a person, a mother and a young one at that? I had to dress Nana in a veil and just had her look at me with those eyes of hers. I didn't tell her what to think about or what I was thinking about. I just told her to not smile. I think this is a powerful piece that gives us a glimpse into the possible past.
