Description
This 30"x40" acrylic painting was commissioned by the Elmira College School of Nursing Class of 2016 as their gift to the college. It depicts a female nurse (all the students in this class were female) joyfully celebrating her graduation and looking at her future. The spheres of influence are: green-for family, turquoise-friends who have her back, gray-people she has not met yet and are therefore undefined. The black line from the left to the right top corner is her life line and on it is a blue sphere-her past, red orange and pink-her present which includes the Red Cross, symbol of her profession and the iris, a symbol of Elmira College, pink-her future all rosy and filled with love, yellow-the sunshine in her life with the rainbow falling upon her to show her many choices in life and finally the pale pastel sphere-her dreams which she holds on to as they float about in the universe.
This quote by Maya Angelou was the inspiration for the title and the artwork. "As a Nurse we have the opportunity to heal the mind, soul, heart, and body of our patients, their families, and ourselves. They may forget your name, but they will never forget how you made them feel."
The fact that they "may forget your name" was the reason for the faceless figure. Love is all they will know.
Thank you very much for the opportunity to create this image for you, Class of 2016. I also graduated from Elmira College so it was an honor to do this piece which will hang in the building which houses the Nursing Program.
