Whether you call her Mother Earth, Gaia, Tellus, Rhea, Demeter, Earth Goddess or something else, it seems that the earth has always been under the watchful eye of a female. Perhaps it is because it is lush and fertile, it shares its bounty with all who seek it, it can be a bit moody-sunny one day and thunderstorms the next, however it is always absolutely beautiful. I thought of Nana as Gaia, and found the painting easy to imagine but harder to create. It came down to her intense gaze to convince me that this image worked. I will never think of Mother Earth in any other way.
